Sensorium: Perceptual Construction as an Artistic Tool
Lecture by Yuri Akbalkan (HfMT Hamburg)
Perceptual construction has been exploited by artists and engineers over the centuries. In particular optical, auditory, and space perception constructs were always been used by painters, composers, and architects. However, all these techniques were never systematically and consistently examined in their entirety. The aim of this lecture is to explore perceptual construction as an artistic tool by analyzing its roles, functions, and perspectives in terms of multimedia art. I am going to reveal some concrete artwork examples to show how this knowledge can be applied by artists.
In this usage, the term ‘perceptual construct’ refers to the construction of perception through sensory modalities in art. This concept also includes or can be linked to perceptual illusions, Gestalt psychology, top-down and bottom-up processing approaches, and other cases, techniques, or theories that aim to show and describe how human perception can be constructed in a deliberate way.
